Unlimited Enchant Levels
Unlimited Enchant Levels is a Minecraft Java Edition 26.2+ data pack by AppleTomaTo that completely removes the level cap on over 30 vanilla enchantments, allowing you to upgrade enchantments in a standard anvil far beyond their vanilla limits — all the way up to level 255!
By combining identical enchantments in an anvil (e.g., Sharpness V + Sharpness V = Sharpness VI), players can continuously increase item power while keeping vanilla enchantment costs balanced and managing Minecraft's hardcoded "Too Expensive!" anvil penalty.
Key Features
- Uncap Level Limits up to 255: Max level caps for ~30 scaling enchantments (Sharpness, Protection, Power, Efficiency, Looting, Unbreaking, etc.) are raised to 255 (the engine maximum).
- Automatic Prior Work Penalty Clearance: Automatically resets the hidden "Prior Work Penalty" on your held items, armor, and inventory every second. This prevents items from quickly becoming unrepairable or un-enchantable in anvils.
- Vanilla Anvil Balance Preserved: Base enchantment costs (
anvil_cost) remain untouched from vanilla. Cheap enchantments stay cheap, and expensive ones stay expensive. - Manual Penalty Reset Command: For naturally high-cost enchantments (like Thorns or Soul Speed), run
/function infiniteenchant:reset_costwhile holding an item to manually reset its prior work penalty. - Vanilla Enchanting Table Intact: Only affects anvil combining. Enchantment table odds and mechanics remain 100% vanilla.
How It Works & Anvil Mechanics
Simply combine two items or enchanted books with the same enchantment level inside a regular anvil:
- Sharpness V + Sharpness V ➔ Sharpness VI
- Sharpness VI + Sharpness VI ➔ Sharpness VII
- ...and keep combining up to level 255!
Bypassing "Too Expensive!"
Minecraft hardcodes a strict 39-level limit in anvils. That limit is triggered by two separate factors:
- Actual Enchantment Cost (
anvil_cost× level) - Prior Work Penalty (doubles every time an item is modified in an anvil: 0 → 1 → 3 → 7 → 15 → 31...)
Because the Prior Work Penalty builds up rapidly after just a few anvil uses, vanilla items quickly hit the 39-level limit. This data pack automatically resets factor #2 (Prior Work Penalty) to 0 every second for items in your hand and inventory, allowing continuous anvil merging.
Note: If an enchantment's base cost is naturally very high (e.g., Thorns, Soul Speed, or Swift Sneak with base cost = 8), higher levels may still hit the 39-level cap due to factor #1 (Actual Cost). If this happens, use
/function infiniteenchant:reset_costwhile holding the item to keep the penalty at 0 and continue upgrading.
